Pride and Orientalism

Orientalism is defined as a way of seeing that imagines, emphasizes, exaggerates and distorts differences of Arab peoples and cultures as compared to that of Europe and the U.S. This is a very backwards view as it makes our way of life better. There is no way to judge whose lifestyle is “better.” It is purely subjective. There is no way of determining whose is better and it is selfish to think that there is. We need to broaden our horizons on culture and be willing to accept everybody’s backgrounds and ways of life. This is what makes America great.

  1. It’s all about that mutual recognition, personally but also globally.

One of the scariest aspects of the past week of news is the way nations are working unilaterally, hoarding resources for themselves. In the end, this will, of course, effect the poorest countries the worst.

This post draws me back to my philosophy class that brings up the idea of morality is based on one’s culture and way of life. What might be deemed appropriate in one culture can be extremely offensive in another. At the end of the day, everyone must recognize that we all have our own stories and backgrounds and we cannot assume that the way we choose to live is the “correct” way. This is related to the idea that you don’t know what a person has endured or been through therefore do not make assumptions.
