“Iron Man” a Dramatic Comedy?

“Iron Man” released in 2008, kickstarted the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and set the stage for the franchise that we know today. Robert Downey Jr plays a brilliant and arrogant billionaire fans know as “Iron Man” aka Tony Stark. Downey Jr.’s performance perfectly mixes comedy and arrogance to give the character depth and make him a fan favorite.

Robert Downey Jr.’s “Iron Man” is considered a dramatic comedy as while it is known as a superhero movie, it adds a good dose of humor that adds a comedic effect to the story. Downey’s character is known for his quick wit and sarcastic remarks which bring out the irony in Stark’s situations such as how he is a weapons creator who fights against his own weapon creations. These moments help balance out the serious and dramatic aspects of the story like Stark’s conflicts he faces as Iron Man. The blend of drama and comedy in “Iron Man” creates a unique and entertaining experience that can rarely be found in movies as popular as “Iron Man”. The comedy used in “Iron Man” provides a great tool for catching attention as well as easing the tension of the dark scenes. “Iron Man” definitely succeeds in making comedy a meaningful art form. It enhances the meaning of each situation Stark finds himself in and is a great kick-starter for one of the highest-grossing franchises we know today.

    You did a good job explaining in detail the irony and how that can be translated into a conclusion in Iron Man’s role in the movie. I like that you make the point that without his wit, the movie would not have the same feel as it does. Great job!
